Skin Damage Factors

Inflammation

Several different types of damage like infection, trauma, abrasions, burns, etc cause inflammation of the skin. It is a rare possibility but inflammation can also be caused by an auto immune response i.e. a malfunction of the immune system of the body, here it doesn't require any external cause to exist.

One of the most important process to heal the skin is inflammation but again as we know excessive usage or presence of anything is harmful, similarly excessive inflammation is damaging for our skin or to any other organ of the human body.

You must be thinking what exactly inflammation does? It incorporates release of large amount of destructive free radicals and MMP (MMP is an enzyme, which disintegrates the skin matrix by destroying the collagen and elastin present on the surface of the skin) accelerating the aging process.

The short term and self limiting inflammation from cuts, abrasions or cosmetic procedures is not of much concern but chronic inflammation is something that one should worry about.

One of the most common problem triggered by inflammation is acne. Chronic acne requires treatment and should be treated, but some of the treatments recommended for acne are irritants and they can cause skin damage too if used in excess or with not proper instructions.

Whatever you do, just keep this thing in mind that treatment should not have more damage than the disease itself. You should consult with your dermatologist and work out an effective treatment which suits your skin.

You should not entertain such treatments which may help you to get rid of your acne but leaves behind chronic irritation of the skin.

There are other common skin conditions, which may lead to chronic inflammation, and they are

  • Eczema (exema).

  • Psoriasis.

  • Dermatitis.

  • Inflammation of rosacea.
